ISO 27001 is part of the ISO/IEC 27000-series, a family of standards for information security. It uses a top-down, risk-based approach to evaluation, specifying the requirements for implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing, and continually improving an Information Security Management System (ISMS). It also includes requirements for the assessment and treatment of information security risks, based on the needs of the organization.

The standard is designed to cover more than just IT: it includes details for documentation, management responsibility, internal audits, and corrective and preventive action, requiring cooperation among all sections of an organization.
